Is Soup a Meal? Let's Debate.

Updated: Jan 27, 2019

We both have different views on the topic so here is a transcription of our debate:

Halle: Soup is a meal. If you eat enough of it you're gonna be full.

Sarah: Soup can fill you but that doesn't necessarily qualify it as a meal. I can eat a sleeve of Oreos and get full but that doesn't make them a meal.

Halle: You can have Oreos for dinner and then that's your dinner.

Sarah: Wait, let's look up the definition of meal.

Meal Definition: any of the regular occasions in a day when a reasonably large amount of food is eaten, such as breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Halle: Soup can 100% be a meal. There are times I make soup and that's what I eat. Like you can have really filling soup that is meant to be a meal. Like chicken noodle soup.

Sarah: See I don't think that's a meal. That's the one especially.

Halle: Why not?? That can totally be a meal. There are plenty of times that I have just eaten chicken noodle soup and its a meal.

Sarah: Online it says soup is not a meal according to Seinfeld.

Halle: Yea because that show started the debate and asked if soup counts as a meal and they said no but SOUP FUCKING COUNTS. Soup is a meal.

Sarah: It says soup is a course not a meal.

Halle: Not every normal person has a several course meal.

Sarah: It doesn't have to have several courses but it does have to be more solid than liquid. If it is gonna make my stomach slosh I wouldn't consider it a meal.

Halle: Hearty soups are definitely a meal, maybe not like a miso soup. And I think that part of it is like.. it's.. well..kind of just like.. HONESTLY BIG SANDWICH.

Sarah: BIG SANDWICH?? WHAT IS THAT?!

Halle: Like big Pharma. Big sandwich wants you to think that you need a sandwich to eat soup so you buy a sandwich. "Because you couldn't possibly eat soup by itself."

Sarah: Yea like I would need bread or something.

Halle: But does having bread make soup a meal?

Sarah: No, but I think the fact that I have to have it means it's not.

Halle: THATS BIG SANDWICH. Do you think cereal is a meal?

Sarah: Thats a good question because its basically cold soup.

Halle: Yea like if you can have cereal for breakfast why can't you have soup for lunch?

Sarah:Just because I eat it for breakfast doesn't really make it a meal. I think the difference is that cereal is still cereal without the milk but soup isn't soup without the liquid. So the base of it is liquid which makes it not a meal. Soup is a liquid with solid added and cereal is a solid with liquid added.

Halle: I disagree with that because soup is when it all comes together. Broth isn't soup.

Sarah: It definitely is. I'm gonna look up the definition of soup.

Soup Definition: a liquid dish, typically made by boiling meat, fish, or vegetables, etc., in stock or water.

Sarah: So tomato soup is soup and there's not really anything in it. But I wouldn't eat it by itself I would only eat it with grilled cheese.

Halle: Like I said, that's Big Sandwich.

This debate continued basically reiterating the same points for about 15 more minutes. We'll spare you the repetitive details but here is our verdict. Halle still believes soup is a meal and that Big Sandwich is the enemy and Sarah still believes if your tummy sloshes after you eat it, it isn't considered a meal. We agreed to disagree.
